Class Descriptions and Schedule
for the 9th Summer Texas Toot

May 27 - June 2, 2007


The regular classes (see list of what's offered this year) are taught Monday - Friday: two class periods in the morning, and three periods in the afternoon. See an overview of the week's schedule for mealtimes, check-in and check-out, etc. There are also nightly activities such as madrigal singing, an ice cream social, and the Great Krummhorn Konklave, as well as a faculty concert.

This year there also will be a Masque theatre project for singers and instrumentalists, offered as a daily session culminating in a performance at the end of the week.

The detailed schedule of classes (from which you can make class selections) will be available sometime in early May!

Classes Offered (as of 4/28/2007)

This year, each class will already be assigned to a specific period of the day to make for a less confusing selection process! That schedule is not yet available, although we hope to have it worked out by May 5. However, below is a not-quite-complete list of the classes that will be offered.

Flanders Recorder Quartet — Recorders (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2007, Bart Spanhove will be teaching:

The Finishing touch of ensemble playing: Based on my book, I teach you the different techniques of becoming a better ensemble player. With examples of music between 1400-2007; recorders, all levels.

An honor to Vivaldi, the master of concerti: Virtuosity and beauty: all combined in music of a great composer. Arrangements of Vivaldi's music for recorder ensembles.

Master Class: Händel-Barsanti sonatas for recorder and b.c. Händel and Barsanti were both working in London around 1700. Their music is a mix of different styles and contains Italian, French, English and German elements. (Prepare at least one sonata of both composers.)

This Summer, Paul van Loey will be teaching:

Good Morning Tooters!!: Warming-up exercises with Paul for the fingers, the tongue, the breathing, etc... This session is very close to technique lessons. An ideal way to start your musical day!

Master Class: Sonatas by Loeillet and Telemann for recorder and continuo. We will work on interpretation and interaction between the solo-part and the bass.

Advanced consort (1 per part): German and English consort music á 5: Music by Brade, Dowland, Tye, Simpson, Schein, Scheidt, etc. Advanced: Five recorder players with Renaissance recorders

This Summer, Joris van Goethem will teach:

English Composers in Germany: William Brade, Thomas Simpson and other English musicians preferred to work in Germany instead of England. The working conditions were much better and the English nationality and style was regarded quite positively in Germany. Recorder players, other instruments welcome. Intermediate Level.

Modern Recorder Music: Different Flemish composers wrote beautiful pieces for recorder ensemble. Discover some of these treasures, most of these compositions are not edited. Music by Jeroen D'Hoe, Jan Van Landeghem. High-intermediate — Advanced level.

Basically Bach: Bach for recorders, Brandenburg concerto, cantata movements. In combination with some other pieces for recorder ensemble. Level: High-Intermediate.

English Consort Songs: Sweet melancholy: 4 recorder players, low consort instruments and soprano voice (must have fluent sightreading).

This Summer, Tom Beets will teach:

Ohimé, cueurs desolez: Sad-hearted polyphonic songs from Italy, England and France. Would be nice to have some low instruments available! Recorders, intermediate and up.

Encore! : Popular songs, medieval singing and lively pieces arranged for recorders. Prepare for some modern techniques and be open-minded!

Cantus Firmus: In this course we explore all the compositional techniques of cantus firmus - preferably in small groups. We'll look at Counterpoints on "La Spagna", English settings of the tenor "Susanne un Jour" and more in order to understand the principle that Cantus Firmus compositions are always based on the same thing, but are very interesting in their varieties of the top parts. Also: how do we play the Cantus Firmus parts on recorders? (breath issues, tempo issues, etc).

The perfect gentleman: A varied selection of dance pieces, from Playford to Warlock. Intermediate recorders.

Members of the Flanders Recorder Quartet will teach:

Recorder Orchestra: large-scale music for large group of recorders, all levels.

John Mark Rozendaal — Viola da gamba (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2007, John Mark Rozendaal will teach

Viola da Gamba Dojo: A wholistic mix of violasthenic exercises, technique, musicianship, "easy" repertoire, and complex repertoire. All levels welcome, no enrollment limit, the more the merrier.

From the Sublime to the Ridiculous: Early English consort music. Taverner, Tye, Tallis, Baldwin, Musica sacra e chinchiana.

English Consorts: Dances, Fancies and In nomines.

Pre-Lawes Diploma Course: Repertoire to prepare the technical and musical skills needed to play the consorts of William Lawes well.

Tom Zajac — Winds, Reeds, Brass, Ensembles (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2007, Tom Zajac will teach

The Maze and the Warrior: Canons and other Musical Puzzles. Like musical alchemists, composers of the late middle ages and early renaissance delighted in fashioning full compositions by using the raw materials of only a scant one or two lines. The performer of the day realized these compositions by applying various canonic techniques to the base metals of these simple lines in order to create the gold of the composers' intentions. In this class we will recreate this deeply satisfying experience with the use of specially designed editions, beautiful color handouts and multimedia aids, including an animated movie. The music will be created as a collaboration between the participants and such great composers as Machaut, Dufay, Mouton, Obrecht, Palestrina, Morley and many others. Although the class is designed for upper-intermediate players and higher, no early notation or special clef reading skills are required.

Lusciously Lassus: Orlando Lasso or Orlande de Lassus was one of the greatest and most sought after composers of the second half of the 16th century. He left as a legacy a large and varied body of works (over 2000 survive!) which set texts in French, German, Latin and Italian, and in styles ranging from the most devout and high-minded sacred works to raucous and rambunctious drinking songs. We will look at some of his little-known large ensemble motets which foreshadow the great polychoral works of the Venetian style and also sample a variety of his rhythmically lively secular songs. For any and all singers, recorder and viol players.

Renaissance Flute Class: Open to any players with experience with Renaissance, Baroque or modern flute, this class will offer the rare opportunity to play on a matched whole consort of Renaissance flutes by the renowned Italian maker Filadelfio Puglisi. Instruments will be supplied by the teacher (if necessary) and music will be chosen from the repertory of vocal and instrumental music appropriate to these warm and delicate instruments. Limited to six players.

Italian and English loud band: Shawms, sackbuts, cornetti; intermediate to advanced.

Bruce Brogdon — Lutes (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2007, Bruce Brogdon will teach

English and Italian lute songs: (with voice teacher Daniel Johnson) Works of Dowland, Campion, Monteverdi, Caccini etc., with lute tablature or basso continuo accompaniment. Singers should prepare at least two pieces and bring several copies. This class is open to performers of all levels. Easier pieces can be provided for beginners.

Lute ensemble: English music from the song and masque repertoire. At least intermediate skill necessary.

Lute technique: Open to beginners and more advanced players.

Lutes and Harps: (with harp teacher Becky Baxter) Duets from the 15th and 16th century repertoire from France, England, Italy and the Netherlands. Open to all harps and lutes and early guitars. If class shows interest, we may devote one day to Spanish dance repertoire as well.

Karen Burciaga — Violin, Orchestra (back to top)

This Summer, Karen Burciaga will teach

Fiddle band: For violins, violas, viols; intermediate and up.

Theater orchestra: Coaching baroque orchestra for theater project.

Becky Baxter — Early Harps (back to top)

At the Texas Toot Summer 2007, Becky Baxter will teach

Beginning harp: Hands on introduction to harp technique in general with specific emphasis on early harp techniques and repertoire. Knowledge of reading modern music notation and a music stand are required. Limited number of harps are available. Please sign up for this class in advance and let us know if you have your own harp or if you will need to borrow one.

The Next Level Harp Techniques: For intermediate and advanced harpists with emphasis on applying physical skills and intabulating skills into English, French and Italian repertoire of the 15th and 16th centuries (companion class to Lutes and Harps class).

Lutes and Harps: (with lute teacher Bruce Brogdon) Duets from the 15th and 16th century repertoire from France, England, Italy and the Netherlands. Open to all harps and lutes and early guitars. If class shows interest, we may devote one day to Spanish dance repertoire as well.

Harp Ensemble For Fun: Harp Ensemble For Fun - This will be mostly a for-fun reading session for mixed harps. The music selection will be an eclectic mix of repertoire. All levels of harpists are welcome. Light emphasis on individual growth and technical improvement for each student. Low stress and no homework!

Amy Brumley — Voice and Theater (back to top)

This summer, Amy Brumley will be teaching:

Theater project: A fully staged and costumed Masque (performed in English), theatre project with Baroque Band and Continuo; directed by Amy and Jonathan Brumley. To audition for a singing role, send a CD of one Baroque song or aria in English to: 4504 Rosedale Avenue, Austin, TX 78756

James Brown — Viols (back to top)

This Summer, James Brown will be teaching:

Consorts of John Coperario: Consort music of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 parts. Also newly published viol consort pieces by a variety of composers. Upper Intermediate.

Italian Consorts: By Ferrabosco, Mico, and Lupo for 3, 4, 5, and 6 viols. Intermediate.

Daniel Johnson — Voice and Ensemble (back to top)

This summer, Daniel Johnson will be teaching:

English and Italian lute songs: (with lute teacher Bruce Brogdon) Works of Dowland, Campion, Monteverdi, Caccini etc., with lute tablature or basso continuo accompaniment. Singers should prepare at least two pieces and bring several copies. This class is open to performers of all levels. Easier pieces can be provided for beginners.

Holy Primavera! : Exploring sacred and secular vocal music in Italy from c.1300 - c.1500. We'll work on relatively simple laude and other sacred music as well as highly complex secular music up to and including Ciconia. For intermediate and advanced singers (though all singers will be able to enjoy the repertoire!)

Special Coaching: Voices, solo and in ensemble. By appointment; may not meet everyday.
