Classes Offered (as of 10/29/2007)

NOTE: the numbers appearing in this list have *nothing* to do with class periods or scheduling. They are just a way to number each teacher's classes so you can tell them apart, and so you have a short way of telling us which classes you are interested in.

Please don't think you have to choose a #1, a #2, a #3, etc. Pick any and all the classes you like, and then it's Danny's task to make the schedule so you get to attend all of them.

Alison 5 General technique class.
Jan 3 Renaissance Romps; dance music for lower intermediate level players.
Recorders, Intermediate
Jennifer 1 Ensemble improvisation. Using simple dances (Susato, Praetorius) as a starting point for learning tips and "rips" for ensemble performance; for SATB, intermediate-advanced players welcome; the class can be individually tailored based on the student's desire to explore the possibilities beyond the notated music.

Alison 2 Improvisation class which will include a section on playing 'divisions on a ground'
Alison 4 The Queen's Delight: consort class on English consort music; high intermediates.
Jennifer 2 T'Andernakens! Explore various polyphonic compositions based on the popular Flemish tune. Compositions based on other "pop" tunes may also be explored (Een vrolic wesen, L'homme arme, In mynen zin, and others). Three, four and five-part compositions. Upper-intermediate to advanced players.
Jennifer 3 17th-century Venetian canzonas (may also include Frescobaldi): trios, quartets, and quintets possible. Intermediate-advanced players.
Frank 2 Bach on the recorder. Intermediate-advanced players.
Frank 3 Music of Renaissance French Masters: Gombert, Le Jeune, and others. Upper intermediate-advanced players.
Tom 3 Renaissance recorder consort: for players with Renaissance instruments or experience playing them. Limited to 6 upper-intermediate and advanced players.
Recorders, Advanced
Alison 3 Master class for solo rep (van Eyck, Telemann, contemporary pieces, Hotteterre, Bach in arrangement, etc.). Unaccompanied.
Other Winds
Alison 1 Traverso class: Baroque flute for intermediates and above.
Tom 4 Bagpipes for all comers: If you've ever wanted to try the Renaissance bagpipe or get another shot at it, here's your chance. Any experienced players can work on a piece at the end of class.
Dan 3 "Real" Music for Krummhorns: No Susato or LPM Crumhorn Anthology stuff here! We'll look at motets and canciones from Spanish sources, including the ministrile collection for the Duke of Lerma, whose voice ranges fit perfectly well on krummhorns.
Dan 4 Late 15th Century music for shawms and sackbuts: Mostly Flemish music for alta capella from Italian wind band sources in Ferrara and Florence.
John Mark 1 The Viola da Gamba Dojo: A wholistic mix of violasthenic exercises, technique, musicianship, "easy" repertoire, and complex repertoire. All levels welcome, no enrollment limit, the more the merrier.
John Mark 2 Fiddle band: For violins, violas, viols; intermediate and up.
John Mark 3 Dowland song class for viols alone or viols and voices.
John Mark 4 English consort class for all viols; after enrollment, the repertoire will be chosen for a form-fitting class!
John Mark 5 Solo English consort class: high intermediate and advanced: strictly one-on-a-part.
Bruce 1 Beginning continuo: grounds and simple continuo songs for lutes and harps.
Bruce 2 tba
Bruce 3 Lute technique class: this can include beginners and the more advanced students as well.
Bruce 4/Danny 1 Lute song class: Student's choice of rep! If possible, let us know in advance. The instructors will also bring their full arsenal of songs; beginning through advanced.
Bruce 5/Danny 2 Song master class: for more advanced students.
Becky 1 Beginning Harp - a few harps will be available for this class. Please bring a music stand. This is a hands on opportunity to investigate plucking technique. Instruments and repertoire will be discussed. Modern as well as historical harps are welcome.
Becky 2 The Definitive "Bishop of Chester's Jigg" Class: Purcell for all instruments and all levels of playing. This three part rollicking, English Country Dancing tune arranged by Purcell will be studied and further arranged for whatever instrumentation is available. You will need a music stand. The ability to read music is required.
Becky 3 Harps and the French Connection: 16th century chanson for ensemble and solo playing. Modern as well as historical harps are welcome. All levels of harp playing.
Tom 1 & 2/Dan 1 & 2 A Petrucci Sampler: Team-taught by Tom Zajac and Dan Stillman. Ottaviano Petrucci was the first (and greatest) printer of music in the 16th century. We will look at a variety of pieces found in his prints: songs, motets, mass movements, laude, and frottole, written by some of the greatest composers of the day. For singers and all instruments. There will be two sessions, one on Sat morning and one on Sun morning.
Tom 5 Puzzlers, the next generation: Some of you have taken Tom's Puzzler class which focused on various and sundry canons from the Medieval and Renaissance periods. This class will offer several ingenious canons from the 17th-21st centuries. Challenging but great fun!
Dan 5 Gloria from the Missa Pro Victoria for mixed winds. Victoria's music, with its clear textures and compact part-writing, lends itself extremely well to performance on instruments. His double choir Missa Pro Victoria is for 9 voices, and the Gloria is full of "call and response" sections and alternating duple and triple meters. Sorry - no shawms!
Danny 4 Sephardic Sing-Along: For voices and instruments! Beautiful melodies for a non-stressful and relaxing class!
Becky 4 Fandango Fun: An opportunity to romp and play in an improvisatory way ... a casual study of this popular 18th century Spanish dance form. Although we will be improvising, a music stand is necessary for the handouts which will have guidelines. For all instruments.
Becky 5 Paracumbe Without a Parachute! An opportunity to freefall musically, to explore improvisation with another popular Spanish dance form from the early 18th century. Although we will be improvising, a music stand is necessary for the handouts which will have guidelines. For all instruments.
